Abstract
The rapid integration of Artificial Intelligence (AI) into Library and Information Science (LIS) has generated debate about its impact on employment. This paper examines whether AI reduces job opportunities or transforms professional roles. It addresses concerns that automation in cataloguing, classification, indexing, and reference services may render traditional roles obsolete. Using a qualitative approach, the study reviews LIS literature (2015–2025) and applies thematic analysis to AI applications in areas such as metadata generation, digital preservation, DDC-based classification, and standards like AACR2R and RDA. Findings indicate that while routine tasks are increasingly automated, new roles are emerging in data management, AI ethics, and user interaction. The study argues that LIS professionals are shifting from task-oriented functions to strategic, analytical roles requiring critical thinking and technological proficiency. It concludes that AI does not reduce employment but reshapes it, making continuous skill development essential for sustaining relevance in an evolving information landscape.
